Fort Crockett

The eastern emplacement of Battery Hoskins is located about 500 feet from the western emplacement. When the battery was initially constructed, the guns were able to fire in almost any direction. However, the additional protection added when the emplacement was casemated came with the price of a more limited field of fire. In order to have as broad a field of fire as possible, the emplacements each face in slightly different direction, with the western emplacement facing mostly south, while the eastern emplacement faces more southeast.
Another view of the eastern emplacement of Battery Hoskins. Note the thickness of the concrete canopy over the emplacement, designed to protect the gun carriage and part of the barrel from an aerial bomb or high-angle shell.
One of the rear entrances to Battery Hoskins, now mostly buried, but with the battery name and year of construction visible over the door. The other rear entrance is not buried, and the magazine spaces have been used in the past for storage.

If you are in Galveston, the location of Fort Crockett is easy to find, just get on Seawall Blvd, which runs essentially east-west along the ocean side of the island, and look for a big hotel with Battery Hoskins underneath it!! The remains of Battery Laval are on the seawall side of the street somewhat further east from Battery Hoskins.
